Interceptive Orthodontics

Interceptive Orthodontics

The teeth form an integral part of our lives. They help us with oral functionality, speech, and allow us to maintain a pleasing facial structure. Losing a tooth or two can lead to a lot of disadvantages and also result in hindered oral functionality. Hence, dentists always recommend their patients get their missing teeth restored with prosthetic ones. Dental implants are the most sought-after restorations when it comes to replacing missing teeth.

What are dental implants?

Implants are a combination of a metal root structure that is coupled with a ceramic prosthetic tooth. Together, a dental implant entirely replaces a missing tooth and fills in the gap left by it. Dental implants are inserted into the jawbone so that they stay firmly attached to it, thereby providing excellent stability. They are preferred over their closest alternatives, such as dental bridges and dentures owing to several benefits they offer.

What are the positives of choosing dental implants?

  • Implants offer excellent strength and durability.
  • Since the implant crown is made from tooth-colored, dental-grade ceramic, it can be customized to match the appearance of the natural teeth.
  • The metal implant stud will help to hold the jawbone intact by preventing deterioration. Also, the grooves on its surface keep the prosthetic tooth stable.
  • With an implant in place, you will be able to bite and chew food without any hassle.
  • Implants are long-lasting. Their life expectancy is approximately ten years, depending on how well you care for them.
  • Implants prevent the drifting of teeth from their orthodontically right positions.
  • The aesthetics of the implant are impeccable. Anyone who sees your smile will not be able to distinguish it from the adjoining natural teeth.

What is the procedure for getting an implant?

During your initial consultation, the dentist will check your candidacy for the implant. Based on the observations made, the dentist will suggest further treatment plans. A digital scanning tool is used to create a digital mold of the teeth and the surrounding tissues. It will be used to fabricate the ceramic crown in a dental laboratory.

The dentist makes a small hole on the jawbone in place of the missing tooth and inserts the implant in it. Dental cement is used to firmly fix the implant in place, after which the dentist suggests a few months healing period. During this, the gums will heal, and the jawbone will grow around the implant, thereby helping it stay stable.

During the next dental consultation, the dentist will place the ceramic crown on the implant using a connecting element called the abutment. It will be checked for fit and comfort, after which it will be permanently fixed to it using dental adhesives. It could be polished to enhance its appearance and make it look as lifelike as possible.
